Medical cannabis has been legally available on prescription in the UK since 2018, but access, prescribing responsibility and the evidence base remain complex.
NICE guidance currently covers cannabis-based medicinal products in areas including severe treatment-resistant epilepsy, multiple-sclerosis spasticity, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, chronic pain and prescribing governance.
For many patients, however, the first healthcare professional they approach is their GP.
This resource is intended to make that first conversation easier to navigate - without asking primary-care professionals to promote, prescribe or endorse medical cannabis.

- Recommend a particular clinic, doctor, product or pharmacy.
- Provide a route for paid patient referrals.
- Replace NICE guidance, local prescribing policy, medicines governance or clinical judgement.
Key point for primary care
Specialist initiation and shared care are separate decisions.
For cannabis-based medicinal products where specialist initiation is required, NICE states that the initial prescription must be made by an appropriate specialist medical practitioner.
NICE also provides for subsequent prescribing under an appropriate shared-care agreement where the patient's condition is stable, shared care is in their best interests and the other prescriber is confident in making a fully informed prescribing decision.
NHS England provides additional guidance for clinicians on prescribing cannabis-based products for medicinal use and their legal and governance framework.
