Can I take prescribed medical cannabis from the UK to Australia?

Quick answer.

For medicinal cannabis generally, the federal traveller exemption limits the amount to a three-month supply. State and territory controlled-medicine rules can still impose additional requirements after entry, so the federal exemption is not the whole check.

UK → Australia checklist.

1. Carry the actual prescription. TGA guidance says medicinal cannabis under the traveller exemption must have been prescribed by a medical practitioner and supplied for that treatment.
2. Keep the original pharmacy packaging and label. TGA guidance points to the dispensing packaging and label as evidence that the medicine was supplied in accordance with the prescription.
3. Keep the quantity within the permitted treatment supply. The federal rule generally limits medicinal cannabis carried under the traveller exemption to a three-month supply.
4. Check your Australian state or territory before departure. TGA warns that local laws for Schedule 8 medicines, including most medicinal cannabis other than cannabidiol, differ across jurisdictions and may impose extra possession or prescription requirements.
5. Check vaping-device rules separately if relevant. Australia has separate traveller limits for medicinal-cannabis vaping devices and unfilled cartridges, capsules or pods, so do not assume the general medicine quantity rule covers the device itself.
6. Check every transit country. Australia’s exemption only answers the Australian entry question and does not authorise possession in another country used for a connection.

Does my UK prescription work for the Australian traveller exemption?

The TGA says the traveller exemption does not specify the country of origin of the prescription. What matters federally is that there is a prescription from a medical practitioner and that the cannabis medicine was supplied to the patient in accordance with that prescription, for example by pharmacy dispensing.

That is different from saying a UK prescription is automatically valid for every purpose once you are in Australia. State and territory law can impose additional possession requirements, and the TGA specifically recommends contacting the relevant state or territory medicines and poisons regulator before travelling with medicinal cannabis.

Can I post more medicine to myself in Australia?

Do not rely on the ordinary personal-importation scheme for cannabis. The TGA states that cannabis and therapeutic goods containing cannabis are excluded from the normal Personal Importation Scheme except through the traveller exemption. Separate licensed medical-practitioner import pathways exist, but they are not a simple patient mail-order route.

Can I access medical cannabis while I am in Australia?

Australia has a domestic medicinal-cannabis system, but it is separate from the traveller exemption. Most medicinal cannabis products in Australia are unapproved therapeutic goods and are accessed through the Special Access Scheme or Authorised Prescriber pathways.

The TGA says access to unapproved medicinal cannabis is arranged through an Australian-registered health practitioner using the relevant TGA pathway. A UK prescription therefore should not be treated as an automatic Australian pharmacy refill. If you may need continuing or replacement treatment, contact an Australian clinician before travel and allow time for the local prescribing and regulatory process.

What about state and territory rules?

This is the most important Australian complication after the federal border rule. TGA guidance says state and territory governments have their own prescription and possession requirements for Schedule 8 medicines, including most medicinal cannabis other than cannabidiol. Some jurisdictions may require a prescription from a practitioner registered in that state or territory, and Tasmania has additional requirements for some cannabidiol products.

Before departure, identify where you will actually stay — for example New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland or another jurisdiction — and check that regulator’s current medicines and poisons requirements.
