Myth check

Common medical cannabis myths, checked

Medical cannabis is neither a miracle nor simply a recreational product with a label. The useful answer is usually more specific: which product, which route, which legal context and what evidence?

“A prescription means it cannot make you feel high.”

Some prescribed products contain THC and can cause psychoactive effects. Product, amount, route and individual response matter. Do not drive or perform safety-critical tasks while impaired.

“Medical cannabis is the same as illicit cannabis.”

Both may contain cannabinoids, but a prescribed medicine follows a lawful specialist, pharmacy and product-supply route. Illicit products do not provide the same governed prescription, labelling or supply trail.

“Natural means risk-free.”

Plant origin does not remove adverse effects, dependency risk, interactions or impairment. NHS guidance notes risks vary and generally rise with THC content.

“CBD never matters for safety.”

CBD is not intoxicating in the same way as THC, but it can cause effects and interact with medicines. Consumer CBD products are not interchangeable with prescribed medicines.

“A prescription guarantees it will work.”

Prescribing is an individual clinical decision under uncertainty, not a guarantee of benefit. Monitoring and follow-up still matter.

“Prescribed flower can be smoked.”

The 2018 regulations prohibit smoking cannabis-based products for medicinal use. Follow the prescribed route and label.

“Prescribed means no dependency is possible.”

The NHS describes dependency as a potential risk, although controlled specialist monitoring changes the context. Concern about tolerance, withdrawal or loss of control belongs with the prescriber—not a self-directed dose change.
